Gothic architecture, an Architecture style thrived at medieval century. It was developed from the Romantic architecture, inherited from renaissance architecture. Gothic architecture was developed in the center of France. From 12th to 15th, city handicraft industry and business guild are prosperous. Democratic regime is carried out in the city in some degree. Therefore citizens were very enthusiastic in building churches in order to show up their own cities’ features. Besides, churches were no longer the pure religious buildings, were becoming citizens’ town hall, public hall, center of cities’ public life even the market and theatre. The characteristic for gothic architecture is Pointed Arch, Flying Buttress, giant window as well as the painted glass with bible stories. These characteristic have endowed the building a light and graceful flying feeling. New frame and structure are better to enhance the force for supporting the rest part of the building, also make the architecture more grand and majestic. Pointed Arch The previous Cylinder arch from Rome architecture has been generally changed to Pointed Arch which sometimes be called as Gothic arch. Thrust force was acted on the four bottom stone, therefore the arch will not be limited by other factor thus building can be taller and bigger. In the meantime, pointed arch also gives us an “upward” visual cues. Flying Buttress Flying Buttress is auxiliary facilities which used to share main wall pressure. It has been widely applied in the romance building. But Gothic building leaves the covered and solid buttress outside called flying buttress. Due to people wanted the building to be taller church at that time, so the effect and appearance for the flying buttress has been enhanced greatly. The famous Gothic building are Italy Milan Cathedral, Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria, The Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris
