22/8/2014 - Florence Broadhurst prints applied to rugs

You don't have to be a vaudeville vamp, a globe-trotting socialite or a French fashion designer on London's Bond Street to appreciate the work of Florence Broadhurst , an eccentric Australian who formed a carpet and wallpaper business that became an international sensation in 1972 - and whose patterns are regaining acclaim, thanks to their reintroduction to the world in recent years.

Broadhurst herself was a vaudeville singer, a fashion designer and socialite, among other things, who traveled the globe and reinvented herself many times before settling down in her native Australia.

She founded a studio in Sydney where artisans produced handmade silk screen patterns that she tweaked for style and color. She died at the hands of a mysterious killer in an unsolved 1977 murder. Her life was the subject of a 2007 book by Helen O'Neill , "Florence Broadhurst: Her Secret Extraordinary Lives" (Chronicle Books; $24.95).

O'Neill wrote that after Broadhurst's death, her only son took over the business, but it failed soon afterward.

San Francisco interior designer David Mast is working with Cadrys, an Australian rug company that holds the license to Broadhurst's designs, to make Broadhurst area carpets available to Northern Californians.

The bold and sometimes intricately patterned rugs - florals, swirls, patterns and psychedelic motifs - are custom-made, run $80 to $100 per square foot and come in wool, silk, hemp or banana silk, or a combination of any of the four; clients also have a choice of size and color.

"As a contemporary designer," said Mast, "I love to see these rugs in projects because they're colorful, exotic and stand the test of time."

David Mast Design, newly relocated to the historic Clock Tower building, 461 Second St., Floor D, San Francisco. (415) 655-3883. davidmastdesign.com.
