8 Rules of Italian style

The French are often celebrated for their innate style, but it oozes out of the pores of Italians, too. Mela de Luna-Recrosio, Paris-based style correspondent, shares, “The French have a refined aesthetic—they have perfected the art of ‘understated elegance,’ it is like they don’t want to bring too much attention to themselves. Meanwhile, Italian style is distinctly more sensual and flamboyant.” Want to exude the passionately glamorous style of Italian women? Here are eight rules to live by:

Sophia Loren is the epitome of Italian style.

1. Livin’ The Good Life

Says Mela, “Fashion is not merely a matter of choosing what to wear, but an expression of one’s lifestyle. For Italians, their choice of color for instance—there is such a thing as Italian red—reflects their gusto for food, for love, and basically anything that provides pleasure.” To imbibe Italian style, first and foremost, you must radiate the same fiery passion for life, love, food, and fashion.

2. Embrace Your Curves

“Everything you see, I owe to spaghetti,” Sophia Loren famously once said. From Sophia and Gina Lollobrigida to Madonna (don’t forget she’s got Italian blood in her veins), these sizzling hot icons don’t try to conceal their curves—they celebrate it. Their unabashed confidence inspires fellow women, while it simply drives men wild! Embrace your own curves by knowing what silhouettes flatter your body (for starters, the wrap dress is universally flattering).

3. Dress Better Than The Dress Code

An Italian lady is always appropriately—and glamorously—dressed for any occasion, whether she is attending a wedding, hosting a dinner at home, soaking up some Mediterranean sun, or simply popping into the deli (remember, you never know whom you may bump into). When in doubt, wear black—unless you are going on a beach holiday, then wear white.

4. Sunnies on!

Take your cue from the Milan Luxe City Guide, which begins: “Welcome to the heart of Italian wealth and style, where the removal of sunglasses is still a surgical procedure…” Invest in a flattering pair of oversized sunglasses to instantly add an air of European cool to anything you do—whether zipping around town on a scooter, lunching with your lady friends, or walking the dog.

5. Coffee Commandment

Visiting Italy soon? Bet you can’t wait to hit a coffee bar and sip your caffé standing up just like a local! (Tip: If you prefer to sit leisurely at an outdoor café looking impossibly chic, it will cost you much more). Before you place your order, take note: Italians take their coffee rituals pretty seriously, so having a cappuccino after midday is considered not only a mortal sin, but severely unfashionable!

6. Vavavoom Factor

There’s just something innately sensuous about Italian women. Is your own look lacking some oomph? Inject some sophistication with key pieces like a calf-flattering stiletto, an intriguing smokey eye, and a go-to dress that sculpts you in all the right places without threatening any wardrobe malfunctions. For style inspiration, Mela suggests turning to “Italian designers like Dolce & Gabbana who epitomize sensuality, representing women in control of their sexuality.”

7. Island Chic

For more casual, summer holiday looks, there’s no better style peg than the Capri jet set. Think: striped bateau tees, capri pants, head scarves, crisp white polos, floor-sweeping caftans, bejeweled sandals, espadrille wedges, market totes, the ubiquitous oversized shades, and a perfect white bikini. When putting together a boho luxe island look which translates really well in tropical cities, remember you’re going for relaxed chic—never ratty.

8. Everyday Glamour

Italian women seem genetically predisposed to effortless, everyday glamour—so how do we steal this look? Mela says, “Italian dressing is a reflection of their mindset.” Glamour starts with being comfortable in your own skin and femininity. Of course, it helps to have little tricks up your sleeve—an easy updo that will take you from the beach to the bar in a jiffy, a classic red lip, an intoxicating, sparkling fragrance, and the attitude to carry it all off.
