13/12/2014 - Port Orange Army couple get free wedding from grateful community

In his 15 years in the U.S. Army, Sgt. First Class “Jay” Garry White Jr. has served with distinction in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, and been honored with three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart after a suicide bomber attack that injured his knee.

In addition to being in harm’s way, Jay, 34, said one of his biggest trials was enduring long separations from his wife, Linda, 32, and their two children, son, Trajan, 12, and daughter, Mia, 5.

Now, for a family that has sacrificed so much, the community is showing its appreciation this weekend in the form of a free wedding dress at the Estate on the Halifax, valued at $45,000, which includes a chapel ceremony, photography and video, massages, rehearsal dinner, a reception with a disc jockey, cake and catering, and overnight accommodations, according to the nonprofit that’s organizing the event, Weddings of Honor.

“It’s been incredible,” said Jay, an ROTC military science instructor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. “Everybody has been outstanding. I just feel overwhelmed by the generosity of everybody.”

One hundred family and friends from across the United States, including Alaska, are coming for the rite to correct a past wrong as the couple jokingly refers to their original wedding in 2000 — a charmless civil ceremony at a courthouse when Jay was 20 and Linda was 18 — as the wedding “that was knot.”

About “15 years later, they are at the wedding they never thought they would have,” said Linda Cheatham, senior director of marketing for the Estate on the Halifax, an all-in-one wedding campus with a chapel, gardens, reception hall, a pub and guest houses.

13/12/2014 - Couples rushing to altar for cool wedding date

It's crunch time for wedding planner Abby Sander. It's just one day before her next wedding and every hour counts.

"It's exciting. It's always a test of how well you've prepared because of how many details," said Sander. "Do we still need to tie up loose ends? And you can't over communicate at this point."

She's one of thousands of wedding planners across the country getting ready for a wedding Saturday.

It's all because of the cool date, 12/13/14.

"You expect everyone to get engaged Christmas or New Year's time, but an actual wedding, not so much," said Sander, who founded her own wedding planning business, A Wedding Come True, four years ago.

December is usually a slow time of year for weddings.

This weekend last year there were 7,000 weddings in the U.S. This year, 20,000 couples may get hitched according to People Magazine.

"I think for some people if it holds some significant meaning to the couple or maybe just makes it easier to remember your anniversary date," said Sander.

She said sequential date weddings are nothing new.

"I had a wedding a couple years ago on 8/9/10," Sander said.

And now she's counting down to another once-in-a-lifetime date for the couple's once-in-a-lifetime day.

"We're looking pretty good," said Sander. "We're in good shape."
