|Little Lemons raise money for new elementary room furniture|
If you saw a dancing lemon on the corner of Van Raalte Avenue and 18th Street on Wednesday afternoon, it wasn't the heat getting to you - it was just the Little Lemons from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holland promoting their annual lemonade stand.home furniture living room
Program members, third- and fourth-graders at the club, took turns taking money, making lemonade, twirling signs and serving drinks at a lemonade stand outside the club's south side location.
The program lasts for several weeks throughout the summer. Kids learn different aspects of the business world, including marketing, budgeting and being an entrepreneur.
The kids offered up regular or pink lemonade for $1.50 per cup from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday. All funds raised will go toward purchasing new furniture for the elementary room at the Boys & Girls Club.
The Little Lemons program, now in its third year, is run by Kaite Muñoz, community engagement coordinator at the Boys & Girls Club. While the stand was open, Muñoz was managing the kids and making sure kids got a turn at each job. We've got money, taking orders, making lemonade - two different flavors - then we put in a lemon or lime and a straw," she said. "We have kids with signs, and then a mascot."
The mascot was a lemon suit created by Little Lemon member Baxter Graham. He said he thought of making a costume after seeing sign twirlers for other businesses.
"Sometimes I see people in costumes leading the way to somewhere, like a lemonade stand," he said. "That made me get the idea to do that."Graham said the costume was effective at luring in customers and the part of the day he was most excited about.
Diego Balcazar also took a turn in the lemon suit, but said he was most excited about helping the club."Earning money for the new furniture for the elementary room," he said about what he was most looking forward to. "I wanted to make my own business, so I joined Little Lemons to learn about business."
