The DRI also seized 19,185 kg glass beads valued at Rs 1.90 crore from offices and godown of Dhirajlal Khoyani, owner of Om Shanti Beads in the city. Import of glass bead attracts 28% duty, hence Khoyani has allegedly evaded Rs 40 lakh in customs duty, said a DRI official. "Searches were carried out at offices and godown of Om Shanti Beads in Rajkot. During the search, it was revealed that Khoyani, who is engaged in imitation jewellery business, stored the consignment of glass beads at his shop," said a senior DRI official. "Primary probe suggests that Khoyani had visited China in February to import glass beads which is used in artificial jewellery. However, he does not have licence to import from China. So, he imported the items through Om Shanti Impex in Mumbai. All the consignments were of Chinese origin and items were imported under the guise of some other cargo items," said an official. "On seeking import documents Khoyani could not produce any legal papers. So we have seized 19,185 kg glass beads valued at Rs 1.90 crore and are investigating the case. This is the first such case of smuggling of Chinese glass beads in Gujarat to evade customs duty," a DRI official said. Sources said DRI officials have become alert after this seizure as Rajkot's imitation jewellery market is one of the biggest imitation jewellery markets in the country. The items were imported through Port in Mumbai and then brought to Rajkot. "We have called the owner of Om Shanti Impex for questioning in this regard and more detains would emerge after his questioning," a DRI official said.
