Another less commonly seen but worthwhile brand is Clevo – an OEM laptop builder, whose models are imported by some smaller Australian system builders. These laptops are based on specific chassis models, with a range of customisable hardware options available to kit them out.

Opting for a pre-loved laptop can save a fair chunk of money, or help afford a more powerful model on a smaller budget. Upgrading to an SSD over a mechanical hard drive can also help improve performance on a slighter older machine.

Be wary of buying anything too old – much more than a year or so and it’s a bit too out of date. An easy way to see when it was launched is to Google some reviews, and see when the first were published.

When buying second hand, aim to get copies of receipts, to ensure you can claim on the manufacturer’s warranty if need be.

Six Laptops

Juggling a huge range of variables and trying to find the best laptop is all well and good, but what are some good models? We have rounded up five of our favourites (from cheap to expensive) as a starting point.

We didn’t include any Apple products. Not because they aren’t a good choice, but because they are easy to compare directly.

This sub $500 laptop is one of the best small affordable Windows 10 laptops we have ever used.

Sure, it’s low end, with a Dual Core Celeron N3050 CPU and 2GB of RAM, but is still surprisingly capable for everyday tasks. It’s also fanless, and has a 8+ hour battery life.

The 11.6” screen has a 1366 x 768 resolution, but is IPS for better viewing angles and colour reproduction. It’s also touchscreen and can also fold around through 360 degrees, to create a convertible Windows 10 tablet.

Probably the best laptops Dell has ever made, the new XPS range is an excellent high end choice.

Available in both a 15” and a 13”, the stand out feature is the skinny bezel Infinity screen, which lowers the overall footprint of the unit without sacrificing screen real estate.

The laptops are not cheap (damn weak Aussie dollar), and are available in a range of specs, from more mid range, to powerful i7s.

However, this is partly exacerbated by the phone's hardware, as we found that even the Lumia 950 XL's octa-core 2.0GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chip and 3GB of RAM weren't quite fast enough to run Windows 10 completely lag-free on the big screen.

Navigating the desktop was absolutely fine, but trying to switch between multiple pages in Edge quickly became our number one irritation, as it often took a second for it to load and change tabs, no doubt contributing to our general uncertainty when using the phone as a touchpad. Scrolling down pages could also be rather jerky at times, particularly if there were videos present, and web browsing in general was very sluggish compared to your average laptop or PC.

Another one of Continuum's caveats is that it only works with Microsoft's universal apps, so there may be several apps you have downloaded on your phone which you can't use through the Display Dock. That means no Netflix, Skype, Spotify, Twitter or Xbox apps to name just a few until their respective developers make them truly universal. Admittedly, a lack of entertainment apps is less of a problem for office workers, and you can still access services like Netflix through Edge, but considering the Windows Store already has fairly limited app support compared to the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store, this only narrows down your selection of compatible programs even further.

Thankfully, key apps such as Word, Excel, OneNote, Outlook and OneDrive are supported, and it's these which make Continuum really shine. Unlike Edge, we had no performance issues while typing out Word documents or working on Excel spreadsheets, and in many respects it was just like working on a laptop.

You can also use the File Explorer app to open Full HD videos, pictures, documents, downloads and music files on your smartphone's internal storage or any files you have stored on a USB stick. 1080p video works a treat, too, as we were able to play the Full HD version of our usual open-source test movie (Tears of Steel) without any stutter or lag whatsoever.

Web browsing issues aside, Microsoft's Display Dock could potentially revolutionise mobile office working. When all your basic office apps can be run off your phone, the need to carry around a laptop all day practically becomes non-existent. Of course, there's a fair amount of infrastructure that needs to be in place before we get to the stage of simply plugging in our phones and getting down to business, but provided your workplace has the correct monitor, cables and accessories, then Continuum has huge possibilities.

The only real problem with the Display Dock is that it essentially forces you to use either the Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL as your main handset. As we discussed last month, the Lumia 950's day-to-day operation isn't quite as smooth as we'd expect from a £420 phone, and even the £470 Lumia 950 XL isn't as slick as its Snapdragon 810-based Android rivals.

The XL is still a good phone, and in our testing we found the quality of its display, camera and battery life are all equal to, if not better than, the regular Lumia 950. But when it's dogged by so many daily irritations, it's hard to recommend it and, in turn, the Display Dock, over other flagship smartphones. Continuum is certainly a big point in its favour, and we'd definitely choose the XL over the regular 950 as our Windows 10 handset of choice, but you'll need to be prepared for a rather rocky transition if you're making the jump from Android or iOS.
Razer formally lifted the lid on its Razer Blade Stealth Ultrabook at CES 2016, and I was desperate to get my hands on one.

Fortunately, the company showed off the new high-end, super-svelte gaming notebook at the Las Vegas convention, giving me a chance to play with the new device.
The Razer Blade Stealth is a spin-off variant of the company’s core gaming laptop lineup. However, Razer has slimmed down the form factor significantly – we’re talking a thickness of 0.52-inches and a weight of only 1.25kg.

Not surprisingly, the notebook felt incredibly lightweight in the hand, and looked chic and elegant on the tabletop.

The Razer Blade Stealth ships with a 12.5-inch IGZO touchscreen. It comes in two core variants – one has a QHD panel, while the other boasts an even higher resolution 4K/UHD panel.

I got a look at the 4K version, and the display was superbly sharp. Colours appeared bright and vivid, and detail was excellent.

Following a quick play around with the operating system – Windows 10, naturally – I found the Intel Core i7-6500U dual-core processor (clocked to 2.5GHz) to offer nippy performance. There’s also 8GB of dual-channel LPDDR3-1866MHz RAM to boot. The Smart Keyboard for iPad Pro costs a hefty $169. It combines a Smart Cover with a very thin keyboard that folds up to hold the iPad Pro at a very nice angle for typing.

The iPad Pro has a new connector on the side that allows peripherals like the Smart Keyboard to magnetically connect to provide for data and power.

Apple is also letting third parties use the connector, and there are other keyboards already available.

Apple also introduced a new $29 SD card reader that connects via the iPad Pro’s lightning port. The card reader lets users import photos or videos from their cameras directly to the iPad Pro.

I tested the card reader, and it worked perfectly. It also works on other iOS devices with a lightning port.

The iPad has always been a good consumer gadget — meaning it’s designed to consume information, like Internet surfing, email, watching videos and playing games.

What it has not done well in the past is create content

Of course, I couldn’t try out Razer’s latest gaming fare without actually playing a game, so I tested out the Blade Stealth with Star Wars: Battlefront.

I cranked up all of the graphics settings to Ultra – the maximum available – at a QHD resolution, and the frame rate was fine. There was no stuttering at all, even in outside environments.

By this point, you may be wondering why I haven’t mentioned a built-in dedicated GPU. After all, that’s a must-have on any respectable gaming laptop, right? Not here.
The Razer Core is a dedicated graphics enclosure that sits alongside the laptop and hosts a desktop-grade graphics card of your choice – so long as it’s either Nvidia or AMD.

Instead of the Blade Stealth powering gaming graphics, the notebook simply hooks up to the Core via a Thunderbolt connection.

Plugging the Blade Stealth into the Core via a single connection was simple, offering a superb perk – the Core has a host of ports on the rear, meaning you don’t need to clog up your laptop’s sides with cables.

Both the Blade Stealth and Razer Core are Chroma enabled. That’s Razer shorthand for integrated lighting tech, with 16.8 million colours. It’s also worth noting that the Blade Stealth features the world’s first individually backlit keyboard.Naturally, this synchronised glowing makes the Blade Stealth and Razer Core pairing look sufficiently fearsome on any surface.

I didn’t get an opportunity to test out the laptop's battery life – wait for the full review – but Razer tells me it will offer a minimum of six hours, although better longevity is being targeted.
