1/6/2016 - HP 493529-371 Battery

The main advantage of a simpler laptop is that more people can use it. A Chromebook is ideal for someone who just needs to go online and do stuff, and that’s most users. An £800 laptop is overkill for many people and will probably cause more problems than it solves when it comes to maintenance. People just want to work and play without worrying about the upkeep. But don’t for one moment think that simplicity isn’t good for more advanced users. Firstly, the most popular apps are present as web apps these days so you can get a lot done on a Chromebook. If you’re a writer or blogger then chances are you’ll never need another device. You can create images in Gimp (offline), email contacts (write them offline), read all of the web and type up documents (offline).

We know what you’re thinking. “What about programming? What about gaming? A Chromebook can’t do any of that!” Oh yes it can.The Chromebook’s secret weapon. For a pleasant, simple experience that genuinely makes you more productive: work in the native Chrome OS. But for when you absolutely need to use powerful applications that must be installed: use Linux. There are a number of ways to run Linux distributions on your Chromebook, including dual-booting, but the best is definitely Crouton. Developed by a Google employee, it installs a Linux distro such as Ubuntu but it runs alongside Chrome OS and lets Googe’s operating system handle all the drivers and hardware. It’s amazing.

By using Linux on your Chromebook, you have the best of all worlds. You can do programming more easily in Linux than on a Windows machine and now you have access to terrific standalone apps. See our top 15 Linux apps to get an idea of what you can do on a Chromebook with Linux. You can even install Steam. Saying all that, we find that Chrome OS is so enjoyable and simple that we use it for almost everything until there’s a specific need for Linux and that’s a testament to Google’s clean OS.

If you bought the cheapest Chromebook possible, it wouldn’t necessarily be a great Linux computer but it would let you get more things done. We had an old Samsung Chromebook Series 3 running Ubuntu and it uses an ARM processor more like your phone than a typical laptop. But some Chromebooks are better than others and the very best are formidable machines. Speaking of which…

This is a joyous machine. On paper the Pixel sounds incredible but a bit of a paradox. It’s a high-end, flagship Chromebook made by Google. It’s beautiful and powerful. If you charge it for 15 minutes it will run for over 2 hours. The bar with Google colours on the lid shows your battery level at a glance without having to open it. There’s an Intel Core processor, 8 GB of RAM, and handy USB-C ports. When you turn it on, you’re on the desktop is less than 10 seconds. It feels premium and the keyboard is great. The 2560 x 1700 touchscreen is stunning.

Doesn’t that sound great? The thing is… it’s a Chromebook. We can all see the value in a beautiful screen and a nice keyboard but why throw so much into a device that’s a “glorified web browser”. Well, because the Android apps are on the way. And the Instant Apps. And the ability to use the elegant and fast Chrome OS along with the full Linux operating system makes this a beautiful Linux computer. It’s an absurdly pricey Chromebook at £799, but it depends who you are and what you’re going to do with it. But nobody can deny it’s an amazing laptop.

For most people, the perfect Chromebook is going to be a cheaper model. That’s the point of them really. A lot of people have MacBooks but use them for the same things they could do on a Chromebook. Of course there are also those that really need a MacBook. The Pixel is a weird machine because it’s only going to fit a few people who want a beautiful laptop with an absurdly good screen and has the best features of Chromebooks but is also great for programming and running Linux apps. It’s weird but we like it anyway.

We don’t recommend the Pixel as the Chromebook for most people, but we love that it exists. It also might be a sign of the future for laptops if Google continues to realise its vision of Instant Apps. Watch this space.Huawei Technologies Co officially launched on Thursday its first laptop-tablet hybrid product in China, a move to test water in the personal computer business in its home market.
The 2-in-1 device named MateBook is the Shenzhen-based tech giant's first personal computer product. With a retail price from 4,988 yuan ($760.67) in China, the device boasts a beautifully crafted metal unibody and its battery can last for 10 hours once fully charged.

"We hope this device can redefine the new style of business," said Wan Biao, president of Huawei Technologies Corp's mobile broadband and family products division, adding the device targets business professionals who are style and fashion conscious. The core device of the MateBook is a tablet with a detachable keyboard much like Apple's iPad Pro, and runs Microsoft's latest operating system Windows 10.The launch of the device came at a time when global personal computer market saw 9.6 percent year-on-year decline in the first quarter of 2016.Statistics from Gartner showed that the first three months of this year saw PC shipment fall below 65 million units, a decade-low since 2007.

James Yan, research director at Counterpoint Technology Market Research, said Huawei's move of tapping into PC market is more a strategic expansion in its device portfolio."I doubt the 2-in-1 device can give a significant boost in Huawei's consumer electronic business," he said, adding people usually change their smartphones in one or two years, but it takes three to five years for them to change their personal computers.Huawei has been capturing market shares from Apple’s iPhone in China thanks to its efforts in higher-end smartphone market. But Yan said it is too early to tell whether Huawei can enjoy the same success in personal computer market.

Analysts said that Huawei's MateBook is in direct competition with Apple's iPad Pro and Microsoft's Surface. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro retails from 5,888 yuan in China and Surface Pro 4 retails from 6,688 yuan in China.Counterpoint Technology Market Research estimated that Apple shipped roughly 1.1 million iPad Pros globally in the first quarter of 2016 and the Surface line shipped close to 1.2 million units in the same quarter. The two product lines together took 5.4 percent of the total global tablet market in the first quarter.SINGAPORE - HP has finally launched the Spectre, which the PC maker claims to be the world's thinnest laptop, in Singapore after it was first announced in the US last month.

Made from aluminium and carbon fibre, the Spectre is just 10.4mm thin, making it slimmer than rivals such as the Lenovo Yoga 900S (12.8mm). It weighs 1.1kg.To accommodate the slim chassis, HP split the Spectre's battery into two pieces, which combine to deliver the same wattage as a single battery. The PC maker says the Spectre can last up to 9.5hr per charge. While many ultra-thin computers now come with the low-power Core M processors, the 13-inch Spectre uses the more powerful Intel Core i5 and i7 chips. The laptop has 8GB of RAM.The Spectre is priced at $2,299 for the Core i5 model (with 256GB SSD) and $2,599 for the Core i7 model (with 512GB SSD).

HP is taking pre-orders for the Spectre at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Exhibition (CEE) show at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. The laptop will ship to buyers next month. The PC maker also showed off refreshed models of its Pavilion notebook series. The HP Pavilion 14 and Pavilion 15 are mainstream laptops with the latest processors and Nvidia graphics chips. Both models (from $1,299) offer full high-definition displays and Bang & Olufsen speakers. For those looking for a more versatile hybrid device, the 13-inch HP Pavilion x360 offers four usage modes when rotated by its 360-degree hinge. It is priced at $1,199.

HP also launched new business PCs, which include the EliteBook 1030, a premium 13.3-inch aluminium-clad laptop with an optional 3,200 x 1,800-pixel display. The EliteBook weighs less than 1.2kg and has passed military-grade endurance tests. HP claims that this Core-M laptop has up to 13 hours of battery life. It will be available in July from $2,299.In addition, HP has refreshed its existing EliteBook business laptops with more powerful hardware. The new models will be available next month. There are also new mobile and desktop workstations that cater to professional users. For instance, the HP ZBook Studio is a 15-inch laptop that comes with an Intel Xeon processor, up to 32GB of ECC memory and a 4K display.

Besides computers, HP launched new business printers as well. These include two A3 multi-function printers based on its PageWide technology, which uses a large stationary printhead the size of a page. For small businesses that print up to 2,000 pages a month, the HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 Series (starting at $219) provides professional-quality printing at a lower cost than laser printers, while the OfficeJet Pro 6000 Series caters to those with lower print volume (up to 800 pages). We've all been there: you're sitting at a coffee shop trying to crank out a presentation at the eleventh hour when all of a sudden, your laptop blares out a warning that you have less than 5%remaining battery life.

In an age when manufacturers trade the functionality of removable batteries for the convenience of lighter, slimmer form factors, mobile computing users struggle with balancing portability and power.IntoCircuit
Mobile battery packs, also known as juice packs, are fairly common for smartphones, allowing you to get a few recharges. With these devices, you're out of luck if you need to recharge a more power-hungry Windows-based tablet or a laptop. However, several manufacturers make dedicated laptop battery packs, and I recently bought two different models to test: the IntoCircuit Power Castle PC26000 ($99, £65, AU$136) comes with a 26,000mAh battery and the RAVPower Xtreme 23000 ($99, £65, AU$136) that comes with a 23,000mAh internal battery.

Both units are about the size of a small 7- or 8-inch tablet. Both units share the same 7.3 x 0.8 x 4.9-inch (18.5 x 2.0 x 12.4cm) measurements, and traveling with either battery pack will add 1.5 pounds (0.68kg) to your gear bag. The upside is that with more than 20,000mAh of battery power, you likely won't need to carry your laptop's charger.

The end of the tip that connects to the AC cable is standard size, making them interchangeable. You can use the ones that ship with the IntoCircuit on the RAVPower, and the RAVPower tips will also work on the IntoCircuit. However, there are several differences between the two units. The IntoCircuit comes with just a single USB port, while the RAVPower unit has two USB ports. The USB port allows you to plug in a phone or a tablet to charge your mobile devices, so you don't need to carry a separate power bank. Also, the IntoCircuit comes with a switch that allows you to change the charging current between 12V, 16V and 19V. This is done automatically depending on the laptop model you plug in on the RAVPower. The RAVPower has a single button that activates the LED strip. This LED strip shows how much battery power you have left and what charging current is used to charge your laptop.

Dell sells a Power Companion with various battery capacities. The Dell Companion is more compact than either the IntoCircuit or the RAVPower models, and the unit looks like a Dell power brick that charges your laptop. When you're at your desk, you can daisy chain to recharge the Power Companion and your Dell laptop by connecting your Dell charging brick to the Power Companion, and then connecting the Power Companion to your laptop. The Dell Power Companion has been one of my staples whenever I use a Dell laptop. Like the third-party battery packs that I've tested, Dell included two charging tips, making the battery compatible with the company's enterprise and consumer line of laptops.

If you'd rather not deal with adapters and charging tips, ChargeTech makes a 24,000mAh battery pack that comes with an AC wall outlet built into the unit. When you need power, connect your laptop to its power brick, and then plug the power brick directly into the ChargeTech. This makes it a more versatile solution for users with obscure charging tips, and you won't have to worry about compatibility. The downside is that you'll have to carry the ChargeTech and your laptop's power supply, which could add significant weight to a mobile setup.

If you find that you'll be away from a wall outlet for extended periods of time, or are the type to forget to charge your laptop overnight, there are battery packs with even more charge. Amazon sells battery packs that go as high as 50,000mAh.At 1.5 pounds (0.68kg), the IntoCircuit weighs almost as much as the 1.73-pound (0.78kg) Surface Pro 4. With the Type Cover, the Surface Pro 4, as a laptop, weighs 2.37 pounds (1.08kg). This means that the IntoCircuit is 60% of the weight of the Surface Pro 4 and Type Cover. You'll definitely feel the weight when traveling, but I appreciated the flexibility of not having to look for a power outlet. I've taken the IntoCircuit on several business trips and conferences, and the extra power means that I can work freely without fear of running out of juice.
