4/6/2016 - HP 576833-001 Battery

In the tests, the UCI nanobattery was able to endure up to 200,000 charge cycles “with 94–96% average Coulombic efficiency.” The battery was still rated as brand new by the end of the experiment. To put the new battery’s performance in better perspective, the average laptop battery has an average lifespan of 300 to 500 charge cycles with diminishing capacity at its top efficiency. With 1,000 cycles every two years, a laptop using UCI’s nanobattery would approximately last for 400 years.A previous record of 40,000 charge cycles was made by a nanobattery set in a different configuration developed by Stanford researchers in 2007. Applying such technology to commercial use could mean a huge revolution for electronics.

Well, that's not good. Late Wednesday afternoon, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall for battery packs in Toshiba laptops sold between June 2011 and January 2016. The recall affects nearly 40 different Toshiba models of PCs including Portege, Satellite, and Tecra models. The CPSC estimates the recall will affect about 91,000 units sold in the United States and another 10,000 sold in Canada. Toshiba first revealed the battery pack problems when it announced a voluntary recall in late January.

Anyone affected can receive a free replacement battery from Toshiba. On top of the models directly affected, users of other Toshiba laptops may have ended up with defective batteries through purchasing extra and replacement battery packs, as well as packs replaced during servicing.Toshiba has a complete list of all models that are potentially affected by the recall on its site. The computer maker also has a utility you can download that will automatically check your system to see if your battery is part of the recall. For those that want to check manually, Toshiba asks that you look on the bottom of your PC for the Toshiba model sticker. Once you find that, you can enter your PC model part number on Toshiba’s site to see if you’re affected.

This appears to be the largest recall by Toshiba due to defective batteries since the company was caught up in the major Sony battery recall that started in 2006.The impact on you at home: So far, the CSPC and Toshiba are aware of four instances where defective battery packs overheated and melted. Those events didn’t result in any injuries. Getting caught up in a recall is always a pain, but it’s better to suffer without a battery pack for a few days or weeks than risk suffering damage to your system. Until you receive a free replacement, Toshiba advises you to remove the battery pack from your laptop and use the AC power adapter only.Doctoral research student Maya Le Thai was working in her laboratory with nanobatteries one day when she decided to try a new approach. She coated an entire gold nanowire with a manganese dioxide MnO2 shell and covered the assembly with a "plexiglass-like" electrolyte gel, but the resulting outcome was completely unexpected.

As she "playfully" experimented with different materials, the resulting nanobattery produced effectively "unlimited" lifetime charge cycles lasting well over 400 years.Traditional nanowire-based batteries are thousands of times thinner than a human hair, highly conductive and feature a large surface area for the transferring and storing electrons. In practice, however, they are extremely fragile and don't hold up to repeated charging or cycling - a typical laptop battery holds around 300 to 500 charge cycles, for example. In lithium-ion batteries, nanowires usually expand and grow brittle or crack over time. Using the UC Irvine doctoral researcher's technique, the MnO2-coated gold nanowire was able to last up to 200,000 charge cycles over a span of three months without even detecting any power degradation or nanowire fracturing. The official test rates the resulting battery “with 94–96% average Coulombic efficiency.” In other words, it was effectively still new at the end of the three-month experiment.

You can read and compose emails in Gmail, read your Google Drive docs and start new ones, read things you saved to Pocket, create diagrams in Giffy, draw pictures in Sketchpad… you get the point. They still run through the browser but the Chromebook can store and run them even when you don’t have a connection. The Chromebook isn’t bricked offline, despite what some would have you believe.A couple of years ago Google hinted that select Android apps could be used on the Chromebooks. A select few arrived in beta but now they’ve just announced that the entire Google Play Store will make its way across. This means that any Android developer who wants to tweak their mobile app can have it run as a Chromebook app. This means their app can work with mouse and keyboard, it can have multiple window sizes, and can used during genuine PC multitasking.

People who knock web apps have missed the fact that the most popular apps in the world are web apps. Android apps will likely please these people as it’s more of a traditional application experience. But the best thing is that Google is working on Instant Apps so they’re Android apps can be used instantly from the web without installing them. This takes all the best things about mobile and web apps and mushes them together in a way that’s perfect for the Chromebook.

One of the best things about Chromebooks is how they play nicely with Google’s other services and products. If you use an Android phone or tablet, you’ll feel right at home despite the taskbar and desktop background that feels more like a Mac or Windows PC.Your Chromebook listens for your commands, much like your phone does. If you say “OK Google”, it will start listening for the same requests you can make on other devices. And the best part? Small Google Now cards can appear in the bottom right corner or be accessed from a small icon on the taskbar. So you can see those important notifications, meetings, and sports scores without even looking at your phone. Google Now power users will appreciate this. We do.

5. Amazing battery life

The whole point of a laptop is that you can move it around easily, even if it’s just in your own home. Sit in the kitchen, sit in the living room, take it to work, use it on the train etc. If your battery is crap then you lose some of that freedom because you’re constantly tethered to the wall. The Chromebooks have exceptionally battery life. The average now is about 10 hours but some like the Dell Chromebook 13 last almost 14 hours. To have a laptop that’s nice to type on and is guaranteed to last the whole day is a joy when you have serious work to get done.

4. Options options options

As an exciting new product that many people didn’t understand, manufacturers had to experiment quite a lot with their Chromebooks to find what people like. At first most models were very cheap and had average components. Now you can get Chromebooks with an Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB of RAM. The experimentation means that today there’s a wide range of Chromebook options, making it easier to find something that’s right for you.

The variety of models means you can get the best value for money. You aren’t going to be storing much on the computer except documents and pictures? Then there’s no point paying the model that costs £100 more for the bigger hard drive. You watch a lot of movies on your laptop? Then get the one with the HD screen.

Sure, you can customise most laptops these days. Head on over to Apple and you can change just about everything in your MacBook setup to make it cost thousands more. The difference is you can choose between very expensive MacBooks and extremely expensive MacBooks. You can find great Chromebooks from around £100 up to £1000 and the perfect one for you will be in there somewhere (and likely at the cheaper end).

This was Apple’s mantra and worked well when comparing the user experiences of OSX and Windows but today it feels true to the Chromebook vision. Chromebooks are simple and that is an precious thing these days. Your Chromebook just works. No system administration to worry about, no anti-virus software to upgrade, no bloatware pre-installed. You just sign in with your Google credentials and everything just works. Sharing it with others is easy. Upgrading is easy (and automatic). File management is easy (yes, Chrome OS is more than just the browser). Dell's Power Companion is a far sleeker battery pack if your office relies on Dell Inspiron, Latitude, XPS and Venue laptops and tablets, but if you have an office that supports multiple brands and makes of notebooks and tablets, the IntoCircuit and RAVPower models are more versatile. The ChargeTech will deliver the most versatility, since it comes with an AC outlet built into the power pack, but you'll have to carry around your laptop charger, which will add to the size and weight of your gear bag.

For me, I don't mind hunting for charging tips, and I'd rather ditch my laptop's charger all together, so the IntoCircuit is now a staple in my carry-on whenever I travel.A total of three devices have been unveiled today, and they’re supposed to tackle the budget category with competitive prices, as the more affordable will be available for no more than $199 in the United States.Acer Switch One 10 This is the cheapest model of the newly launched series and comes in the form of a convertible that features a detachable keyboard, so it can be used as either a laptop or a tablet. It comes with a 10-inch screen with IPS technology, “the latest quad-core Intel Atom processors” (neither Microsoft nor Acer has disclosed the CPU available on the device), built-in fingerprint reader for Windows Hello support, 8 hours of battery life, and dual camera for video calls.

The V 10 is the upgraded model that packs a 10.1-inch display, and has a longer battery life (up to 9 hours according to Microsoft), USB Type-C port for charging, and a fingerprint reader for Windows Hello. The laptop features Acer’s new Snap Hinge latch-less magnetic design, so it can be used as a tablet too. The device will come with a Precision Touchpad to let you make the most of Windows 10, and a Dual Camera system for video calls and easy photo shooting. It’ll be offered in multiple colors, including Pearl White, Shale Black, Coral Red, Peacock Blue and Navy Blue, and will go on sale later this year in North America for $249.This is the most advanced model of the new series and comes with an Intel 6-generation core CPU, NVIDIA GeForce 940M, and DDR4 memory, but the exact specs, such as the amount of RAM, haven’t been disclosed. The device will be available in two versions, with a 14- and a 15.6-inch screen.

The laptop will also boast a built-in fingerprint reader and feature a full HD LED display, TPM 2.0 for hardware-based encryption keys, and two stereo speakers for better audio quality.North America will once again be the only market getting it later this year, with prices starting at $599.Samsung withdrew from the European laptop market several years ago, but it’s now made a return – in a small-scale, oddball fashion. The Galaxy TabPro S is a tablet that comes with a keyboard case, transforming it into a laptop. Despite the Galaxy name though, the TabPro S runs Windows 10 and not Android. While contentious, this is far from the biggest flaw afflicting this hybrid.

Galaxy-style
Although the TabPro S runs Windows instead of Android, it still looks similar to its smaller, Google-powered handheld relations. It has a dark blue coloured backing rimmed by metal with a gentle concave groove, so it resembles the Samsung Galaxy S6. It differs from its smartphone counterpart though in having a plastic backing rather than a glass one. Although it doesn’t look as stylish, this is arguably more sensible in terms of weight. As expected, the TabPro S is fanless as it uses a new Skylake-class Intel Core m3 processor, so your work won’t be disturbed by the intrusive whirring of a fan.

The TabPro S is reasonably light for a 12in tablet at just under 700g, although this does mean you’re less likely to use it in bed and in the sofa. It’s slender too, but it achieves its thinness and relatively light weight by leaving out what many find most attractive about Windows tablets in the first place – full-size USB ports. There’s just a single USB-C port for charging as well as data transfer, wired peripherals and video-out when used with the appropriate adapters. This will be less bothersome if you’ve already moved over to cloud storage and wireless peripherals, but more inconvenient if you haven’t.

The weight of the TabPro S, as well as its girth, may make it less than ideal for casually consuming content at home, but the size and quality of the screen makes it well suited for editing and consuming content at work. It’s exceptionally bright with excellent colour accuracy and contrast. The 4:3 aspect ratio means widescreen videos will have bigger black bars at the top and bottom, but the squarer shape makes reading and editing documents feel more natural.Unlike the Surface Pro 4, the TabPro S doesn’t come with a stylus – the Bluetooth writing accessory is instead available separately. It’s an odd omission, not only given the obvious utility for drawing and annotating documents but also because a bundled stylus is a given on the smaller Galaxy Note range of phablets.
