Asus Transformer Book T200TA
With one of Intel’s quad-core Bay Trail CPUs powering the whole show, the T200TA feels pretty spritely most of the time, and an Overall score of 0.37 in our Real World Benchmarks reflects more than enough poke for everyday office and internet applications. However, if you were hoping to use that 11.6in screen for multitasking, you may be disappointed. Asus has trimmed costs by partnering a 32-bit installation of Windows 8.1 with a frugal 2GB of RAM, and there’s no way to add extra memory. As a result, the system can easily get bogged down, resulting in performance that’s sluggish even by Atom standards.On the upside, battery life is as good as you’d expect for an Atom-powered device. With the screen dimmed to 75cd/m[sup]2[/sup] and the Wi-Fi turned off, the T200TA flicked through a variety of web pages and documents for 10hrs 40mins before needing a trip back to the mains. Unlike the T100, the T200TA charges only via the supplied mains charger – charging over USB isn’t supported.

At this price, we never expected the T200TA to be the last word in ergonomic design, but it’s a great little hybrid that does a cracking impression of a budget 11.6in laptop, and doesn’t make a bad tablet either. The display in particular is significantly better than the screens you’ll find on most budget laptops. The Atom processor and 2GB of RAM may not provide enough headroom for everyone’s needs, but as a cheap and versatile Windows device, the Transformer Book T200TA takes some beating."In today’s world, the market for cyber-attacks ... is wide-reaching and attacks are increasingly high-profile and successful in execution," said Jim Alkove, head of Microsoft's Windows enterprise management team."We will have nearly everything in place to move the world away from the use of single-factor authentication options, like passwords," Alkove added.

While two-factor authentication often requires an additional piece of hardware, such as a key fob or smartcard, Windows 10 uses your own devices to verify your identity.The first half of the process requires the user to register at least one device as trusted for authentication purposes. This then acts like a smartcard for all other Windows 10 devices, providing it can connect via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Alternatively, users can register all their Windows 10 hardware as trusted, meaning they can be logged into each independently of others.The second half is a PIN, which can be made up of any number of alphanumeric characters, or a biometric input such as a fingerprint.This means that, even if a user's PIN is stolen, it's useless without a trusted device and, if a device is stolen, it's useless without the PIN or fingerprint.While the feature, which is not currently turned on in the Windows 10 Technical Preview, is being promoted to the enterprise market, Alkove said it will also be available to, and useful for, consumers.

Ralph Gonsalves, prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, approached Dennis Publishing owner and chairman, Felix Dennis, about launching a scheme to empower every secondary school child in the region by providing each one with a state-of-the-art Windows 8 laptop and software.Felix Dennis engaged his team at Dennis Publishing to pull together the deal, with the help of IT specialists Carteme and Westcoat.

"This project is the result of two extraordinary partnerships: one between the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the 'maestro' Felix Dennis and his team at Dennis Publishing, Acer, Microsoft, and Trend Micro," said Dr The Hon. Ralph Gonsalves, prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines."The second is between my government and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, led first by Hugo Chavez and then by Nicholas Maduro which provided the financing. The special personal relationships between Felix, on the one hand, and between Hugo, Nicholas and me, on the other, were instrumental in putting together this amazing project. I thank them and everyone else who has been engaged in it." The scheme will see 12,500 Acer laptops with internet security provided by Trend Micro and a software solution provided by Microsoft, as part of their Shape the Future Campaign, delivered to St Vincent and the Grenadines schools within the next ten weeks.

Powered by lithium-ion batteries – just like most laptops, phones and cameras – electric cars have a limited range compared to conventional ones, and can’t drive for long without needing a charge. With lithium-ion battery development a slow and incremental process, and charging stations still few and far between, range is a crucial issue for the uptake of electric vehicles – and it’s not disappearing anytime soon.

However, Qualcomm thinks it has a solution. Rather than increasing battery size, Qualcomm believes we should shrink it.While a battery gives an EV its best features, it also reinforces one of its biggest drawbacks. “It’s heavy and slow to charge, affecting vehicle dynamics. The charging act itself is so repetitive – occurring once, twice or three times a day – that it’s actually causing an impediment to the uptake of vehicles,” Anthony Thomson, vice president of business development and marketing for Qualcomm Halo, told Alphr. “So putting a bigger battery in, making it more expensive, heavier and slower to charge, seems a little bit daft.”Instead, Thomson sees a future with charging taking place in small but frequent bursts, and at commonly used locations throughout the day. If charging points were available at places such as supermarkets, shops and the workplace, users could charge their car without ever needing to go out of their way – or suffer from dreaded range anxiety. What’s more, the car they’d be driving wouldn’t need a large, cumbersome battery with all the drawbacks that brings.

Cars will pick up power while on the move
“It gives us the prospect of having a vehicle with a very small battery that has, in effect, an unlimited range,” added Thomson.However, that’s only the first step. In the future, cars may be able to pick up power while on the move, in a way similar to trams – or even Scalextric sets. As well as giving electric cars an almost infinite range, this would make the battery nothing more than a safety buffer – not the flawed power source it currently represents.To charge on the move, Qualcomm has had to adapt Qualcomm Halo, its wireless charging technology. Already deployed on the Formula E BMW i8 Safety Car, Halo technology allows charging without wires – at a rate of 7.2kW. That’s enough to charge the BMW in less than an hour.

However, the BMW i8’s technology only works when the car is stationary, and there are many challenges involved in adapting the technology for moving vehicles.So far, Qualcomm divides charging while moving into two distinct categories. While semi-dynamic refers to slower-moving areas such as taxi lanes, dynamic mode is more about charging while at full speed.“We have an automatic guided vehicle going around the factory floor, putting power directly into motors. Most of those vehicles are travelling at a walking pace, so the challenge is to scale this to motorway speeds, make it cheap enough so that it’s not insanely expensive to do, and effectively roll it out on motorways and interstates and that sort of thing,” says Thomson. “We're working hard on that.”

The technology is already being tested in large government-funded programmes, each designed to tackle a new challenge involved in electrifying our roads. First, an EU-funded project called FABRIC is working to ramp up wireless charging from walking to motorway speeds.“It’s a 100m track, which we'll use to start doing a lot of learning about how it works in the field, and what the challenges are for deployment,” explains Thomson. At the same time, another project from TRL and Highways England will look into challenges associated with installing the technology on our roads.So when can we expect to see wirelessly charging roads? Not for a while yet. “For us, it's a 15-20 year plan before we would see it properly deployed,” says Thomson – but that doesn’t mean we couldn’t see the technology in very small deployments.

“We're really excited to see it in the Formula E,” says Thomson. “What would be tantalising is that, with wireless charging, you could have a race on it once a year and then vehicles in the city could use it for the rest of the time.”Lenovo unveiled a host of new laptops and tablets at IFA this year, but, out of the humdrum of incremental updates, it was the Ideapad Miix 700 that caught my eye. Appearing to have borrowed everything from Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3, apart from the terrible name, Lenovo’s 12in hybrid isn’t a mindless knock-off.
